08/08/09 - The man charged in a fatal pickup truck crash faces arraignment Tuesday.

On July 31 a Washington County grand jury indicted Craig Huntley, 56, of Narragansett, with one count of driving under the influence, death resulting, and related offenses. The charges stem from a June 23 crash on Corn Neck Road that killed 28-year-old Mitchell Paskins, a native of Australia who lived in Narragansett.

At the time, both men worked for Interstate Navigation. Police said Huntley was speeding south on Corn Neck Road before the pickup veered off the side of the road, hitting a tree, stonewall and utility pole before stopping in the road. At some point, Paskins was ejected through a window and killed. Two other passengers were also injured. Police Chief Vincent Carlone said Tuesday that the investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

The grand jury’s indictment included charges of driving under the influence, death resulting, reckless driving, death resulting, and two counts of reckless driving, bodily injury resulting. If convicted, Huntley could face five to 15 years behind bars for the DUI charge, as well as fines and the loss of his license for up to five years. The other charges carry jail terms ranging from five to 10 years.

Huntley is presently free on supervised bail, said a spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections. At the time of his arrest, Huntley was ordered to post $2,000 of a $20,000 bail. The terms of bail could be adjusted at Tuesday’s arraignment.

Huntley had worked for the ferry company as an engineer for about a year at the time of the crash. On Tuesday, Director of Security Bill McCombe said the ferry company no longer employed Huntley.

Paskins’ death was the first vehicle-related death on Block Island since 2002.
