Viking's high-speed ferry to come from Montauk and New Bedford By Abby Fox It looks as though Viking Ferry of Montauk, N.Y., will be running its new fast ferry to New Harbor from not one, but two locations this summer: Montauk, N.Y., and New Bedford, Mass.
Despite unresolved litigation between the Town of East Hampton and Viking Ferry, Viking's new ferry, the Viking Superstar , will start the run from Montauk Friday, May 26, company representatives said.
According to Viking's website, vikingfleet.com, the boat's capacity is 150 people. It's a passenger, not a car, ferry.
In 1997, East Hampton passed a law that forbids vehicle ferries or fast ferries to sail in or out of Montauk.
Viking and Cross Sound Ferry, which runs the New London high-speed ferry to Block Island, sued East Hampton in 2004, claiming the town law violated interstate commerce. The town prevailed against Cross Sound in December.
But it's not clear what will happen in Viking's case, and Laura Molinari, town attorney of East Hampton, didn't return calls by presstime.
Neither did John Simpson, executive director of the New Bedford Harbor Development Commission, which has been receptive to a New Bedford to Block Island ferry run.
The ferry to New Bedford starts Saturday, July 1, and ends Sunday, September 3.
The trip from Montauk is expected to take 48 minutes; the crossing time to New Bedford is expected to take longer. The rates: the cost for an adult roundtrip between the island and Montauk is $55; an adult roundtrip to New Bedford is $75.
