On Island Time by Stacey Longo BrownYou probably think the week after the 4th of July is uneventful, but it wasn't this year! During the parade, the superhero float came through with beads and candy for my nephews, which is why they get special mention here (I can't believe you ignored me again, Vin Carlone!) Also, Adam was riding in the first fire engine, which was pretty cool. Anyway, after the parade, I stopped by the Beachhead, and got to chat with Heather Sniffen, who made me promise that I could have a conversation with her and not mention her in the column.
Later that afternoon, I watched Maggie Thimble try to answer the question as to what Scotsmen actually wear under their kilt. She was close to finding out when the bagpipe player whose kilt she was trying to peek under caught her, about the same time her husband did. Alas, it remains a mystery, but it was a fun Fourth.
The rest of the week was rainy, and most people either shopped, ate, or went to the library. I stopped by the library too, and a woman (let's call her "Bonnie") called me "Tracey". People on sailboats were cranky because they couldn't leave, but at least the Empire Theatre ran matinee shows (note to Gary Pollard: my sister says "thank you!")
Later in the week, Amanda England, who was long wondering where her cool beaded sandals that she'd left in her mom's car last fall went to, discovered that her mom's friend had scuffed them up (guilty!) And Phyllis Tupy, in an effort to cheer up each rainy day, wore bright colors. Yet it continued to rain.
My nephew Nathan won a Nintendo DS system (don't ask me what it is, just be in awe because I'm sure it's cool) at Aldo's Bakery. That, of course, makes Aldo's the best place on the whole island.
To finish off the week, Paul Caval refused to go pick up members of the Nyberg/Walsh clan at Point Judith on Friday in his boat, which he probably regrets now that his name is in print. And the fireworks on Saturday night for a wedding at the Sullivan House were a nice surprise!
This week, the skies cleared, and Kinga started cutting hair at Mark's Beachcomber. Rob and Peg Gasper came out for the weekend, and besides the fact that they've been friends of the family for years, so we like them, they also found the house on the mainland that Adam and I are buying, so we love them.
Next week: Paul Caval demands an apology.
