Rolex Race Week returns Dates for this year's Race Week have been released. The regatta — this year it's time for the bigger of the two biennial competitions — will be organized by Storm Trysail Club, and presented by Rolex, June 19 to 24.
For four decades, ocean racers have tested their skills around Block Island in the five-day regatta, which is always held on odd years. This year, the 21st Race Week will be held, like the first one, at the Boat Basin.
More than 200 boats usually show up for the race, packing into docks and mooring in the Great Salt Pond. Entrants sail boats from 24 to 70 feet, and come mainly from the East Coast, although some come from across the nation. A few crews from Europe and sometimes from as far away as Australia and Japan join them to do battle on four separate courses on Block Island Sound.
Also announced was the date for Storm Trysail's Block Island Race. It will be the 60th anniversary of the 185-nautical mile race, which kicks off the summer sailing season in the Northeast. On May 27, boats in IRC, PHRF, double-handed and one-design classes of 30 feet and longer will make their way from Stamford, Conn., down Long Island Sound, around Block Island — creating a stunning ocean spectacle — and back to Stamford.
