July weekend calls for decent weather, Block Island conditions are sometimes erratic and change without warning. But there’s still much to do in less than desirable weather, says the head of the Chamber of Commerce.
Kathy Szabo of the chamber said that in mild rain, the annual Fourth of July parade and Fire Department Steak Fry should still go on, but the fireworks will be postponed if weather is poor. Szabo also listed several other drizzle-friendly activities families could enjoy while visiting the island this weekend.
“Just because it rains doesn’t mean you have to stay in the house,” she said.
Szabo recommended families visit the Historical Society, the Southeast Lighthouse, the Island Free Library and some other valuable sites on Block Island.
Other options she listed include catching a movie at either the Empire Theatre or Oceanwest Theatre, or borrowing one from the library.
Szabo also said that some of the most fun on Block Island could take place in rainy conditions. She suggested families put on some raingear and brave the weather, should it shower this holiday weekend. Szabo also said if a visitor forgets to pack for a wet weekend, raincoats for adults and children could be found at Star Department Store.
“Puddle jumping, biking and nature walks are all fun activities for families to do in the rain,” Szabo said. The Chamber of Commerce also boasts a Block Island scavenger hunt for visitors to complete as well, rain or shine.
Shopping is always a good option for rainy days, and Chamber of Commerce’s Elva Derby said, “Go shopping! Even if you don’t buy anything, just go to browse.” Water Street hosts dozens of shops for families to visit, many of which carry Fourth of July-appropriate merchandise.
A Block Island taxi tour is another rainy-day alternative. The drivers provide their passengers with an hour-long running history of the island, primarily focusing on sights like the lighthouses, Rodman’s Hollow, the nature preserves, the Mohegan Bluffs and the Indian Cemetery.
Art enthusiasts can use their time constructively in poor conditions and visit the several galleries on the island, three of which are located next to the post office.
If a daylong adventure in the rain isn’t desirable, hotels on Block Island often keep a stock of board games for their guests to use. If a visitor is renting a house or condominium, Island Bound carries a variety of games for families to play together.
